From our hometown to yours!
The fourth grade classes of Snow Rogers Elementary School in Gardendale, Alabama begin a year long project in September, 1999 called Travelmates. The Travelmates are stuffed animals which the children send to various parts of the country and world. Each 'Mate' wears an ID tag which includes a class picture and a note explaining the program. The 'Mates' come with instructions and information about the project and also a journal so the 'sitters' can record their name and address, and a brief message about their area in the journal. They are asked to send a small souvenir or postcard or email to the school to let us know where the 'Mate' has been. The instructions ask that on or about April 1st, 2000 the 'Mates' be sent back to the school. (See School address below)While the 'Mates' are away, we will use the writing workshop to create stories about our 'Mates' and their adventures. As we begin to receive postcards and emails we will incorporate Social Studies and Math to locate and track our 'Mates'. Literature, reading, writing, math, science, geography, history, current events, art, reference skills, risk-taking and higher level skills will all be a natural part of this multidisciplinary project.
